Biscuit Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 hi allis it just me or is the new speed limit law for vans and wagons stupid?i drive a 7.5tonne wagon for work and since jan 1st all vehicles over 3.5tonneare limited to 55mph down from 70mphyet in light of yesterdays coach tragedy coaches are still allowed to do 62 mph!!!do you think this is wrong especially as coaches are ferrying people about all day? Guest MATT jr Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 ooo this topic will infuriate the "electric starter motors are just something to go wrong and your lungs will implode at 30mph and over" brigade. there was a topic a while back, about caravans doing 70 (or was it about summet else, that i hi-jacked, i cant remember) i like the french motorways/ and the french regulations on the motorways. and yes i know more frogs die in road accidents than us, but thats because they drive with their feet on the dash, and not on the brake pedal :P MJR Quote
Biscuit Posted January 5, 2007 Author Report Posted January 5, 2007 Yes it does seem that our froggie cousins do have it sorted when it comes to themotorways. But can you see yourself staying calm on the M1 with 2 lanes of motorway crawling with vans, wagons and dreaded caravans and oonly 1 other lane to get past on? Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 the solution to that is do what the french did, and build two, parallel motorways, round the city (im talking of course, of Paris ring road!) (IIRC at one point i counted 20 lanes, 10 going on way, 10 going the other!!) MJR Quote
Biscuit Posted January 5, 2007 Author Report Posted January 5, 2007 doing it that way you would get Swampy and all his tree hugging, bicycle riding cronieslining the sides of motorways waving recycled placards at us lol! Quote
Guest wolfie Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 but the speed limit on the Paris ring road ( Quote
Biscuit Posted January 5, 2007 Author Report Posted January 5, 2007 Paris still is wasteland innit? lol Quote

Guest megadennis Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 90% of Traffic would move more freely and without congestion if it were not for the drivers who insist on staying in the middle lane/lanes even when the inside lane/lanes are clear. This practice is not only very fustrating but is also highly dangerous, and is a large contributing facture to the highest percentage of accidents on Motorways and duel carrageways in the UK and on the Continent Megadennis Quote
Guest MATT jr Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 lane hoggers are a pain in the neck. but what can we do about it? MJR Quote
katman Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 lane hoggers are a pain in the neck. but what can we do about it? Dont have much of a problem with people hogging the middle lane in Norfolk/Suffolk becaue most of our main roads are single carriageway. there are a few dual carriageways but I cant think of any with 3 lanes! Because our roads are single carriageway, 55mph lorries dont affect us either.... some plonker brought in a law restricting them to 45mph  Quote
Higs Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 lane hoggers are a pain in the neck. but what can we do about it? MJRYou've not seen 'Ben Hur' then? But, yes, it's always seemed a bit daft to me that we'll transport human cargo at speeds we couldn't carry bananas. Quote

Guest MATT jr Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 ooo yes i have seen ben hur, but only remember this scene.. http://punkassblog.com/images/ben-hur.jpg i think the law, was based on what your driving is articulated or not. as a coach is not articulated it can do 70. as an articulated lorry/cars & trailers are articulated, then 60 applies. i drive a 7.5tonne wagon for work and since jan 1st all vehicles over 3.5tonneare limited to 55mph down from 70mph i do think coaches should be limited to 60, but this new law seems over the top! if we worked on old theory...the faster u go, the less time your on the motorway. although that was the protocol of the titanic era, and look what happened there  i wonder if the new law effects caravan rigs over the 3.5 tonne limit? - as i had to pass an additional test for my +E cat. Ivor_E_Tower Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 It's part of the government's plan to bring the country to a halt and reduce accident rates still lower from their existing level... there is a level of risk associated with doing anything and the government seem to ignore this. Many roads round where I live have had their speed limits lowered for no apparent reason - there is one stretch which is now 30mph but used to be 70 in the 1970s when I was at school. Lowering speed limits can mean that driers relax more because they feel they are not travelling too fast so don't need to concentrate as much as before...hence increasing the risk of an accident. Personally I'd like to emigrate to America, the Land of the Free where the love affair with the automobile still reigns supreme Quote

big_kev Posted January 5, 2007 Report Posted January 5, 2007 90% of Traffic would move more freely and without congestion if it were not for the drivers who insist on staying in the middle lane/lanes even when the inside lane/lanes are clear. I guess we could do with more 7.5 tonne wagons doing 70mph tailgating them......that would shift the buggers....or flatten them..good result either way. This practice is not only very fustrating but is also highly dangerous, and is a large contributing facture to the highest percentage of accidents on Motorways and duel carrageways in the UK and on the Continent Nah...still doesn't compare with not looking in direction vehicle was moving....75% cause of accidents.....and tailgating....9% of accidents.....closely pipped by driving too fast ( do not cofuse this with speeding ! )...11%...and the good old utter stupidity 4%...the last 1% is usually classed as unlucky or mechanical failure etc. Quote
Bigjeeze Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 Well at the risk of upsetting some of you I am really pleased if this law is true. I am sick and tired of driving on the motorway and all of a sudden some dick head in a 3.5 tonne box van decides to change lane and try racing the ferraris around. If they can drive these things (and they can up to 7.5t GW ) then they should have passed a special test like a proper HGV. All they need to do now is sort out the Mercedes Sprinter flying boxes and I'd be ecstatic!! Quote
Guest gooner52 Posted January 6, 2007 Report Posted January 6, 2007 perhaps we should pay extra for using the middel lane  :) let alone not using turn signals, ever seen the gatwick shuttle going round the m25 south section drives like a mad man ;) :) Quote
